Former Corrections Officer Sentenced on Plea Deal

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- A former corrections officer for Marathon County has reached a plea deal in charges relating to a sexual relationship with an inmate.

Jennifer Kowalski age 40 of Wausau reached a plea deal for her five counts relating to a sexual relationship she had with a Marathon County inmate as a corrections officer. Two felony charges were dropped while she was sentenced for the three misdemeanor charges.

A criminal complaint said Kowalski wrote love letters to an inmate at the jail. She then performed oral sex on him while guarding him at Aspirus-Wausau. The complaint also detailed that the inmate acknowledged a relationship with Kowalski but that it was after she was fired by the department.

Kowalski was fired from the Marathon County Sheriff's Department on October 29th, 2015. The charges were filed a year and a half later.

The plea deal dismissed her two felony counts of 2nd-Degree sexual assault and misconduct/ excessive authority. Kowalski will serve 90 days in jail for a count of resisting or obstructing an officer.

She will then serve three years of probation each for the two other misdemeanors. Kowalski will also have to serve 150 hours of community service.
