P.O.D. 's new album Circles arrives this Friday. As frontman Sonny Sandoval tells ABC Radio, the San Diego rockers wanted to make Circles a reflection of what the band is today, nearly 30 years into their career.

"This isn't our heaviest record, by any means," Sandoval says. "This isn't ' this' kind of record -- it's just the songs that we picked for this record."

"So we went with it, not trying to please a metal fan or a punk fan or a hardcore fan," he continues. "It was just, like, 'This is a P.O.D. record in 2018.'"

While Circles incorporates many of the different styles heard throughout P.O.D.'s discography, it differs from their past albums in one key way: For the first time, Sandoval and company wrote and recorded with collaborators outside the band.

"Before, it [was] kinda like, 'Here's our songs, and now let's just produce it, let's record it,'" Sandoval explains. "This time, it was like, 'Here's our songs kind of in fragments and bits and pieces, and let's kind of build on it. And so we were open for the first time to do that as a band, and I think it showed."

The album's title is also meant to reflect the ebbs and flows of P.O.D.'s long career.

"The meaning for us is, you know, we've been doing this 26 years, we've been on this journey," Sandoval says. "We're still excited about the journey, whether it's a new beginning of some sorts, hopefully, or maybe it's a beautiful end to something that's been awesome for us in our lives and our careers."

"We don't know that, we can't predict that," he adds. "But it really is about the journey."
