MADISON, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) -- Governor Evers says a state task force is nearing a consensus on increasing Wisconsin’s gas tax. Evers is likely to propose the increase in his upcoming state budget plan on February 28.

Evers wouldn't say in his comments Tuesday how much of an increase the task force is considering. The tax is currently 30.9-cents per gallon. It would have to rise to 32.9-cents to fund road projects that are already proposed.

Evers appointed a 34-member task force to study the state’s transportation needs. He told reporters. “from what I hear, at least part of it is gas tax increases.” Evers is also suggesting that the gas tax could be indexed to inflation, which was discontinued by Scott Walker and the GOP-controlled legislature.

Republicans still control the state assembly and state senate, and are said to favor toll roads. GOP leadership says tolls would bring in more money than a gas-tax increase.
