MILWAUKEE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU)  A line of credit is in place for Milwaukee's bid for the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Mayor Tom Barrett told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the money could be drawn upon to address short-term expenses for convention related items that may be needed on short notice. He says tax dollars would not be used for convention costs.

Organizers say the third-party financing was the last major hurdle in the city's quest to host the event. Mayor Tom Barrett won't say what the total amount of the guarantee is or the names of individuals or groups providing it. Barrett met with Democratic National Committee members in Washington DC on Wednesday. He described the meeting as “a closing pitch” for the city’s bid.

The city is competing with Miami Beach and Houston for the opportunity to host the event. The convention is scheduled July 13-16, 2020.
