TOMAHAWK, WI (WSAU) --  It's Tomahawk’s annual “Venison Feed” starting Friday morning; and this year the popular deer hunting tradition is celebrating it's 53rd year of giving away free venison burgers on Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Tomahawk.

Jesica Witte is executive director of the Tomahawk Chamber of Commerce, and says there's lots of delicious free food but it goes fast so get there early to chow down.  "It begins at 11:30 in our downtown Wisconsin Avenue area, and it's a fun event.  We actually give away free burgers and chips, and we do so until they're gone.  So it's one of those events, we can't predict how long it will last, it just depends on how many participants we get."

Organizers estimate they’ll grill up well in excess of a thousand burgers made from more than a 100-lbs. of venison, and it's all donated by area hunters.

"We expect to give out almost 1500 to 1600 burgers this year, so that's also kind of how we gauge how many people attend the event.  It's a rather large number of folks that turn out on our main street," Witte said.  "We rely on getting our venison from hunters in the area, it's all done on donation.  And it's what makes it a true 'free event,' and kick-off for the folks that come."

Hunting season also means a huge economic boom to the Northwoods.  "Hunting season does bring tourists and hunters and we get hunter's widows.  We get everybody to the Northwoods this time of year which is a wonderful boost for our economy," Witte added.

Even though the event is free Witte says free-will donations will be accepted, and several non-profit groups will also be on hand selling chili, bakery, and other "goodies".
