STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -- Voters in Portage County will have the future of the Portage County Health Care Center in their hands.

The Stevens Point Journal reported in August that the County Board unanimously approved a binding referendum to increase the tax levy to support the nursing home. The levy would be raised to $1.4 million a year for four years if the referendum passes. This would exceed the state set tax levy, which requires a referendum.

Per year, a home would pay an extra $24.48 in property taxes. Many view the referendum as asking voters if they would like the county to be in the healthcare business by continuing to own and operate the nursing home.

Portage County voters also have to consider two referendums from the Stevens Point school district come November 6th. If all three referendums pass homeowners within the school district would pay an extra $146 per $100,000 of property value.
