MADISON, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) - UW Hospital officials say four patients have developed Legionnaires' disease.

Officials say the potentially fatal bacterial infection was likely caused by a recent move to reduce water flow when demand is low. Three remain hospitalized. One has been released, but is still being treated with antibiotics.

The hospital planned to extensively chlorinate its water system Wednesday to kill the bug. It’s the first case of Legionnaires’ Disease at the hospital. The last known cases in a healthcare facility in Wisconsin happened in 2010 at St. Lukes in Cudahy, when water in a decorative fountain made 8 people sick.
