LA CROSSE, WI (MetroDource-WSAU)  The UW System President is reprimanding the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse chancellor for "exercising poor judgment" when inviting a porn star to campus to speak. Chancellor Joe Gow paid the $5,000 speaking fee out of his own pocket after a backlash drew international attention.

The porn star, Nina Hartley, was invited to talk about the adult entertainment industry as part of free speech week. System President Ray Cross wrote: “I am deeply disappointed by your decision to actively recruit, advocate for, and pay for a porn star to come to the UW-La Crosse campus to lecture students about sex and the adult entertainment industry.”

Gow's pay raise is scheduled to be discussed next week at the UW Board of Regents meeting and is now at risk. In addition, Gow’s discretionary spending from the past four years will be audited.

The reprimand also says the incident makes it more difficult for the UW system to win further financial independence from the legislature.
